A 90% Reduction of our CO2 Emissions with Biodiesel
As part of our growth strategy, Bertschi continuously focuses on innovations and practices towards sustainable logistics. Through workshops, meetings, and conference participation on the topic, we are able to lead the way towards sustainable supply chain discussions and action plans.
One main goal of improving our supply chains in this way, is to decrease our carbon footprint for on-site logistics. We are thus proud to announce our newest initiative for reducing CO2 emissions at the Bertschi Delfzijl and Terneuzen terminals in the Netherlands. Since June this 2022, we have successfully implemented the usage of alternative fuels for our on-site vehicles.
Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is a renewable diesel which can be produced from various vegetable oils and fats. It is the second largest renewable diesel alternative world-wide.

After internal investigation and planning, the benefits of the switch to biodiesels for our on-site vehicles became clear, and the implementation in these first two terminals in the Netherlands started in June and July.
We started with Bertschi Terneuzen on the June 22, 2022. All our terminal machines here have since been fueled by HVO biodiesel. Bertschi Delfzijl followed closely after on July 1, 2022.
The kick-off of this initiative has proven to be very successful. Our usage of Biodiesel saves 90% of emissions per liter. Bertschi's switch to biofuels for these machines is thus equivalent to a CO2 savings of 442tons per year. Plans for implementation in our other terminals are already in motion.
Sustainable from the Netherlands to the whole Europe
Our Terneuzen and Delfzijl terminals now boast a 90% reduction on CO2 emissions through the usage of HVO biodiesels for local on-site operations. But our efforts in sustainable logistics don’t stop there. The intermodal terminal in Terneuzen connects local operations to the European rail network. Intermodal transport reduces CO2 emissions by 65% compared to pure road transport.
Bertschi Group operates 90% of all European land transport on intermodal transport (combining road, rail, and water transport), therefore reducing our CO2 emissions by 65%, which equals to 301,000 tons per year just through this modal shift.
